The Friend Who Has Done This Trip Before
An American with family in Bangkok, I have spent years finding my way around Thailand. This site started as the notes I kept sending friends before their first trips, especially so they are not caught off guard by the impromptu mannequin challenge when the national anthem plays.
Years of Trips, Mostly to Bangkok
My entire extended family has lived in Bangkok, near Asok, since before it became the Asok we know now. Coming back every other year to visit them and see friends, I have watched the neighborhood change around them over the last few decades.
First Time Thailand grew out of the messages I kept sending friends before their first trips: what to eat, what things cost, how to get around, what not to worry about. Eventually it was easier to write it all down properly, from years of going back, than to keep starting from scratch. I have traveled widely, and Thailand is still the trip I recommend most to first-timers: few places are this rewarding and this easy to get around, with cheap rides, simple transit, and English on the signs when you need it.
How I Travel, so You Know the Bias
One foot in a home kitchen
I often stay and eat with family, so my recommendations lean local. Where that differs from what a first-timer in a hotel needs, I say so.
Not a single-trip take
This is written from many visits over many years, so prices, apps, and entry rules reflect how things actually work now, not one snapshot.
I remember being new
Family ties do not make the first trip less confusing. I still remember the questions, so the basics here are written plainly, for someone arriving for the first time.
What This Is, and What It Is Not
I am not Thai and I do not live here full time. I am a regular visitor with local family, which is a lucky, particular vantage point, not the last word. Brand and restaurant mentions are places I actually like, not paid placements. Where the site earns from ads or the occasional commission link, it never costs you extra and never changes what I recommend.

One person writes this site, so every message reaches me directly. I read all of them and reply to most, though it can take a week or two when I am traveling.

Prices and journey times are typical cases rather than quotes, so recheck anything time-sensitive before you pay. Brand mentions are never paid placements, and the guide is reader-supported: some links may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.
