Worth your time

What Is Worth Your Time on Samui

Samui is a ring road with a mountain in the middle, and almost everything worth seeing sits within a few minutes of that road. A scooter or a car makes the whole island a day.

1

The Big Buddha

Free

Wat Phra Yai’s 12 m (40 ft) golden Buddha on its own islet at the northeast corner, reached by a causeway, with a stair of nagas up to the terrace. Planes from the airport pass low behind it.

Allow 1 hr · Late afternoon
2

Wat Plai Laem

Free

Five minutes on from the Big Buddha and the better temple: an eighteen-armed Guanyin and a laughing Budai standing in a lake, in bright Chinese-Thai style.

Allow 45 min · Pair with Big Buddha
3

Hin Ta & Hin Yai

Free

The grandfather and grandmother rocks on the shore below Lamai, two formations whose shapes need no explaining, with a folk tale attached. Silly, brief, and part of the island’s furniture.

Allow 30 min · Any time
4

Wat Khunaram

Free

The mummified monk: Luang Pho Daeng, who died meditating in 1973 and sits in a glass case in sunglasses, hair and nails still visibly grown. Genuinely striking rather than macabre.

Allow 30 min · Any time
5

The Secret Buddha Garden

Small fee

A hillside of statues built by a durian farmer in the 1970s, up a steep track into the interior. Take a proper 4WD or a tour, not a scooter, and go for the jungle as much as the sculptures.

Allow half a day · Dry weather
6

Na Muang Waterfalls

Free

Two falls in the middle of the island: Na Muang 1 is a short walk with a swimming pool at the base, Na Muang 2 a steeper climb to a taller drop. Skip the elephant rides sold at the entrance.

Allow 2 hr · After the rains
7

Ang Thong Marine Park

300 baht park fee

Forty-two limestone islands an hour and a half northwest, with the Emerald Lake in a collapsed crater and a hard climb to the viewpoint on Koh Wua Talap. The best day trip Samui has.

Allow a full day · Closed November 1 to December 15
8

Fisherman’s Village

Free

Old teak shophouses on the Bophut waterfront, restaurants over the water, and a Friday night walking street. The island at its most pleasant after dark.

Allow an evening · Fri night
One caution

The elephant camps and tiger attractions advertised across the island are not sanctuaries. Read the Responsible Travel guide before you book anything involving animals here.

Thailand’s 20 Best Bars

Where to Drink Properly

Samui’s bar scene is mostly beach clubs and sunset decks, with one room on the national ranking that takes cocktails seriously.

Garnish (opens in a new tab) Previous island winner

The island’s craft entry, which held the Phuket and Samui title in 2024. Worth leaving the resort for a night.
