How to Structure a First Trip

Bangkok · 3–4 nights

The landing pad

Temples, markets, street food, and an easy day trip to Ayutthaya before you move on.

The North · 3–4 nights

Culture & mountains

Chiang Mai for temples, cooking classes, and ethical elephants; add Chiang Rai or Pai with more time.

The South · 5–7 nights

Beaches & islands

One base per coast: the Andaman (Phuket, Krabi) Nov–Apr, or the Gulf (Samui, Phangan, Tao) Feb–Sep.

What Actually Fills Each Stop

The routes above give you the shape. This is what goes in the nights, base by base, with the guide for each one behind the name.

Bangkok & Central
3–4 nights
Bangkok

The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun on one morning, Chatuchak if it is a weekend, and a rooftop to finish.

Day trip
Ayutthaya

Wat Mahathat’s Buddha head in the bodhi roots, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, all by bicycle.

2 nights
Kanchanaburi

The bridge over the River Kwai, Hellfire Pass and the JEATH museum, then the Death Railway over the Tham Krasae trestle and a day at Erawan Falls.

1–2 nights
Sukhothai

Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Chum and Wat Sa Si in the central zone, the Ramkhamhaeng museum for context, and Si Satchanalai if you have the second day.

The North
3–4 nights
Chiang Mai

Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang inside the walls, Doi Suthep at sunset, a cooking class, and a full day on Doi Inthanon. Time it for the Sunday Walking Street.

2 nights
Chiang Rai

The White Temple, the Blue Temple and Baan Dam in one day, then either the Golden Triangle and Doi Tung, or a dawn at Phu Chi Fah.

2–3 nights
Pai

Pai Canyon at sunset, the White Buddha, Pam Bok falls and the Land Split, with Tham Lod cave as the day out.

2 nights
Mae Hong Son

Only if you are driving the whole loop: Jong Kham lake, Doi Kong Mu at dawn, and Pang Ung before the fog lifts.

The South
4 nights
Krabi

Railay and Phra Nang Cave Beach, the Four Islands tour, the Emerald Pool inland, and the climb up Tiger Cave Temple if you can face it.

2–3 nights
Koh Phi Phi

The viewpoint at sunrise, then a private longtail to Phi Phi Leh for Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island before the fleet arrives.

4 nights
Phuket

The Old Town and Sunday’s Lard Yai market, Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha, sunset at Promthep, and a boat day in Phang Nga Bay.

2 nights
Khao Sok

A night in a floating bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake for the Three Brothers karsts at dawn, plus tubing on the Sok River from the village side.

4 nights
Koh Samui

The Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem, Hin Ta and Hin Yai, the mummified monk at Wat Khunaram, and a day boat to Ang Thong.

3–4 nights
Koh Tao

Four days if you are taking the Open Water course. Otherwise Koh Nang Yuan, the John-Suwan viewpoint and snorkeling at Shark Bay.

Do not stack them

Every line here is a base, not a stop. Three bases in two weeks is the ceiling: pick one column and go deep rather than collecting all three.
