Phuket
Thailand’s largest island and busiest beach hub. A full-service island with beaches for every taste, an old town of Sino-Portuguese charm, and the launch pad for Phang Nga Bay. Busy, but easy.
What Is Worth Your Time on Phuket
The beaches are the reason most people come and the least interesting thing about the island. These eight are what fill the days between them.
Phuket Old Town
FreeSino-Portuguese shophouses in sherbet colors along Thalang, Dibuk and Soi Romanee, with cafes, street art and the best coffee on the island. Half a day on foot, easily.
Lard Yai Sunday Walking Street
FreeThalang Road closes on Sunday evenings for a food and craft market that is genuinely local rather than staged. The single best evening on the island.
The Big Buddha
FreeA 45 m (about 150 ft) marble Buddha on the Nakkerd hills with the whole south of the island laid out below, Chalong Bay on one side and Kata on the other. Cover shoulders and knees.
Wat Chalong
FreePhuket’s largest and most important temple, a working one, with a multi-tiered pagoda holding a relic of the Buddha and murals telling the story of the 1876 rebellion.
Promthep Cape
FreeThe headland at the island’s southern tip and the classic sunset spot, with a lighthouse and a shrine. It gets busy, so arrive an hour early or walk down the ridge path for space.
Khao Rang
FreeThe hill above Phuket Town, with a viewpoint terrace and a couple of restaurants looking down over the old town roofs to the sea. Far quieter than Promthep and better at night.
Phang Nga Bay
Boat tour + park feeSea kayaks into collapsed karst lagoons, the leaning stack at James Bond Island, and the stilt village at Koh Panyee. Take a small-boat tour rather than a big one.
Racha & Coral Islands
Boat tripThe nearest clear water to Phuket: Racha Yai for snorkeling and diving, Coral Island for an easy half-day swim. Both leave from Chalong or Rawai.
Patong for noise and nightlife, Kata and Karon for families, Kata Noi for a quieter version of the same sand, Nai Harn and Bang Tao for calm, and the northern beaches around Sirinat for near-empty shore.
How to Spend 2 to 3 Nights
Don’t Miss
Best Areas to Base Yourself
Kata / Karon
Relaxed, pretty beaches with plenty of dining.
Patong
Busy, central, and loud, close to the action.
Old Town / Nai Harn
Character or calmer beaches away from crowds.
The gateway to Phi Phi, Krabi, Khao Sok, and the Similans. See how it all connects on the map and overview.
Where to Drink Properly
Phuket is not only beach buckets and Bangla Road. The island holds the national title for the south, in the old town rather than the resort strips.
A proper speakeasy doing classics and local-ingredient riffs, a long way from a beach bar. Worth building an old-town evening around.
Expect ฿350 to ฿500 a cocktail, shorts are fine, and call ahead out of season. Ranking from the Bangkok Bar Show Awards, October 2025. Bangkok’s ranked bars are in Rooftops & Bars.
