Thailand with School-Age Kids

Once children are five, most of the toddler constraints fall away and the trip opens right up. What replaces them is a calendar: you travel when school lets you, and that decides the coast.

The short version

What Changes After Five

If you have traveled here with a toddler, almost every rule you followed can be relaxed. If this is your first family trip, start here.

The real constraint

You Travel When School Says So

This is the one planning problem the under-fives guide does not have. Your dates are fixed, so the choice is not when to go but which coast to go to. Thailand’s two coasts run opposite monsoons, which means there is a good beach in almost every school break.

Places That Reward This Age

Five-to-twelves can walk further, sit a boat, and remember what they saw, so the list widens well beyond the resort-and-pool shortlist a toddler needs.

Worth building a day around

Days Out, With Shade and Timings

Specific activities, how long each really takes, and how much sun you will be standing in. Heat, not boredom, is what ends most family days here, so plan the exposed things for the morning and keep an air-conditioned option in reserve.

The full-day option

Theme Parks, Water Parks and Indoor Play

Worth building a whole day around, and worth being honest about: these are hot, expensive, and a long way out of town. One in a two-week trip is usually right, ideally on the day everyone has had enough of temples.

Packing & Logistics for This Age

Shorter than the toddler list, because most of it is gone. What remains is sun, water, and paperwork. The full packing guide covers the rest.

Traveling with a younger one too?

Thailand with Little Kids, Ages 1 to 4

Nap windows, strollers versus carriers, car seats, and the shorter routes that suit a toddler. If you are traveling with a mixed-age group, plan to the youngest.

About this guide

Written by Belle, a Thai American who travels to Thailand every other year and has family in Bangkok. Everything here comes from my own visits unless the text says otherwise. Prices and journey times are typical cases rather than quotes, so recheck anything time-sensitive before you pay. Brand mentions are never paid placements, and the guide is reader-supported: some links may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.
