Rooftop Bars & Bangkok After Dark

Bangkok does the sundowner better than almost anywhere: an elevator sixty-something floors up, the heat finally breaking, and the whole city lighting up below. Here are the landmark rooftops and the cocktail bars worth crossing town for. The craft scene is genuinely world-class: eight Bangkok bars made Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, three of them in the top seven.

The Ones I Keep Going Back To

Not a ranking, just the short list I send friends to first.

Cheeky Sake bar shelf: glass jars of snacks, a red maneki-neko cat figurine, a ‘No cash accepted’ sign, and a wall of Japanese travel posters
Sake bar

Cheeky Sake

My low-key go-to: carafes of sake, zero pretension, and a bartender who steers you right. The kind of place you drop in for one and leave at closing.

Proper

An easy, design-minded hangout that works for a first drink or a long one. Unfussy, friendly, and always in the rotation.

Above Eleven

The rooftop I send everyone to first: a Peruvian-Japanese garden in the sky over Sukhumvit, lively but not overwhelming, with a pisco sour at sunset.

Song Wat

The bars have a sense of humor

Song Wat, the old riverside warehouse quarter, has quietly become one of the best places in Bangkok for a drink. Tiny bars tuck into shophouses and storefronts, and the signage, like this “broken, just like your heart” armchair, is half the fun. Wander after dark and let the doorways decide.

The gold-domed bar made famous by The Hangover Part II, high over the Chao Phraya. Iconic, photogenic, and pricey, with the strictest dress code in town.

Banyan Tree

Vertigo & Moon Bar

An open-air deck shaped like the prow of a ship, with a 360-degree view. Romantic, and a little calmer than the crowds at lebua.

Sky Beach

The highest rooftop in the city, about 314 m (1,030 ft) up, above the glass Skywalk tray on the pixelated Mahanakhon tower. The best straight-down view in Bangkok.

A three-level rooftop crowned by an illuminated round bar with a full 360-degree sweep. Livelier and relaxed, a good group night out.

Tichuca

The jungle-themed hotspot with a glowing LED tree, tropical cocktails in pineapples, and a young party crowd. No reservations, so arrive by 5pm.

Above Eleven

An urban rooftop garden with Peruvian-Japanese food, DJs, and a social buzz. Lower and greener than the sky-high giants.

Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026

Twelve Bangkok bars made the 2026 lists, more than any other city. They cluster in five walkable pockets, so a good night usually means picking one pocket rather than crossing town. Eleven are pinned on the map below.

Playful, pastel and full of oddities, like a secret clubhouse. It moved venues recently, so check the link before you set off: this is the one bar with no pin.

How to bar hop

Five pockets, each an easy walk or one short ride end to end.

1 Chinatown, on foot

G.O.D and Opium sit ten minutes apart around Soi Nana and Yaowarat, with Tep Bar in between. Start at nine, finish late, no taxi needed.

2 Silom and Sathorn

Vesper on Convent Road, Bar Sathorn in its mansion, Mahaniyom off Si Phraya. All three are short hops on the BTS Silom Line.

3 Riverside

BKK Social Club at the Four Seasons and The Bamboo Bar at the Mandarin Oriental are a five-minute walk apart. Arrive by Chao Phraya boat.

4 Ploenchit and Ratchaprasong

Lennon’s, Aqua Bar and Firefly all sit within about half a mile of Ratchadamri, so one taxi covers a three-bar night.

5 Sukhumvit

Bar Us on Soi 26 and Dry Wave in Thonglor are four BTS stops apart, the easiest pairing if you are staying east.

Most of these rooms open around 6pm and fill after 9pm. Hotel bars add 17% tax and service, and the independents take cash or card alike.

Outside the capital

No bar outside Bangkok has cracked the Asia list yet, but the national ranking reaches north and south. The Chiang Mai pair sits on the Chiang Mai guide, and the island winners on the Phuket and Koh Samui guides.

Bars that Make You Work for It

Half the fun is finding the door. A password in a phone booth, a wall of magazines, a no-menu bartender who reads your taste: these are the spots worth the hunt.

Secret bars are small and change fast. Many take same-day bookings by Instagram or LINE, several have a no-photos rule, and it is worth checking they are still open before you go.

Good to know

A Good Night out, Without the Surprises

A few small things keep a rooftop evening smooth, from what to wear to how the bill adds up.

Dress the part

Smart casual at the high-rise bars: no shorts, sleeveless shirts, or flip-flops for men. Lebua is strictest, so closed shoes are safest.

Time it right

Arrive about 45 minutes before sunset for a railing seat. The best rooftops fill fast after 7pm, especially Friday to Sunday.

Watch the sky

From June to October, an afternoon storm can close an open deck with no warning. Check the forecast and keep an indoor back-up in mind.

Mind the bill

Drinks are a splurge, often 350 baht and up, with 17% tax and service usually added. Some rooftops charge a cover or a minimum spend.

Getting there

For lebua and the riverside bars, take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and hop the Chao Phraya boat: you skip the river-road traffic and the ride is half the fun. Many cocktail bars take same-day bookings only by Instagram or LINE, so a local SIM makes the evening much easier.

Keep planning
