Responsible & Ethical Travel

A few simple choices keep your trip kind to Thailand’s animals, environment, and communities, and usually make for richer travel too.

Be a Good Guest in the Wild

Elephants

Observe, don’t ride

Choose genuine sanctuaries that do not offer riding, bathing crowds, or performances. Watching elephants roam and feed is the kinder, and more memorable, experience.

Wildlife

Skip the photo props

Avoid tiger selfies, slow-loris photos, and other animal props. Never buy ivory, turtle shell, coral, or other wildlife souvenirs.

Reefs

Protect the sea

Use reef-safe sunscreen, never touch or stand on coral, and take all your trash away from beaches and boats.

Trails

Leave no trace

Stick to paths, carry out what you carry in, and keep a respectful distance from wildlife in national parks.

People & community

Spend in Ways that Help

Local first

Eat and buy local

Family stalls, neighborhood shops, and local guides keep more of your money in the community than big chains do.

Respect

Dress and act with care

Cover up at temples, ask before photographing people, and follow the everyday etiquette in our Customs guide.

Be wary

Avoid exploitation

Steer clear of orphanage visits and exploitative shows. Well-meaning tourism can do harm where vulnerable people are on display.

Plastic

Cut the single-use

Refill a water bottle, refuse needless bags and straws, and carry a tote. Small habits add up fast across a trip.

About this guide

Written by Belle, a Thai American who travels to Thailand every other year and has family in Bangkok. Everything here comes from my own visits unless the text says otherwise. Prices and journey times are typical cases rather than quotes, so recheck anything time-sensitive before you pay. Brand mentions are never paid placements, and the guide is reader-supported: some links may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.
