Not the sights, the things you actively do and mostly need to reserve: ringside at a Muay Thai stadium, curry made from scratch, a morning with rescued elephants, an open-water course, a lantern released into the dark. Grouped by where in the country each one shines.

Thailand’s Great Festivals
If your dates are flexible, a festival can be the highlight of the whole trip. Three are worth planning around.

Doing It Right
A few things worth sorting before you dive in, literally.
Book the big ones ahead
Cooking classes, dive courses, and anything in festival season fill up fast. Reserve the popular ones a few days to a few weeks out.
Choose animals ethically
Pick sanctuaries where you feed and watch rather than ride, and where bathing happens only if the elephants choose it. Skip tiger-photo and elephant-show attractions entirely.
Dress and act for temples
Cover shoulders and knees, take shoes off where asked, and never point your feet at a Buddha. Women should not touch monks.
Follow the seasons
Diving and the islands shine November to April. Yi Peng and Songkran are fixed dates well worth planning a trip around.
One perfect two weeks
Fight night and temples in Bangkok, a cooking class and rescued elephants around Chiang Mai, Yi Peng if your timing is lucky, then south to Koh Tao to learn to dive. That single arc packs in most of Thailand’s greatest hits, and it is exactly how our sample itineraries are built.
