Bangkok’s Parks & Green Spaces
Bangkok hides more green than first-timers expect: a downtown park full of monitor lizards, an elevated forest walk over old wetlands, and a jungle-covered river bend locals call the green lung. Here is where to breathe between the temples and the malls. Go early or late. The parks are loveliest before about 9am and after 4pm, when the heat eases and the whole city comes out to run, cycle, and picnic.
A Good Day in the Green
A few things worth knowing before you spread out a picnic blanket.
Parks are best before 9am and after 4pm. Midday sun is brutal with little shade in the newer parks, so bring water and a hat.
The big monitor lizards in Lumphini look prehistoric but are harmless and shy. Give them space and let them cross the path.
Most central parks sit right by a train stop: Lumphini and Benjakitti near the Silom and Asok lines, Benjasiri at Phrom Phong.
City parks are free and open dawn to around 8 or 9pm. Cycling spots like Rot Fai and Bang Krachao rent bikes cheaply on site.
Do the classic loop: coffee near Asok, the Benjakitti forest boardwalk, then the skybridge straight into Lumphini for the lake and the lizards, all before the heat builds. It is the greenest hour in the city and costs nothing.
