Pattaya
Bangkok’s nearest resort city: a long curving bay, an easy island hop to Koh Larn, headline attractions and family parks, and a nightlife reputation that is only one side of the story.
Day Trip or Overnight?
Pattaya is close enough for a day trip, and its beaches and big attractions make an easy one. But with so much on offer, from Koh Larn to the gardens and shows, an overnight lets you slow down and see past the nightlife headlines.
Distance from Bangkok
The easiest big beach resort to reach from Bangkok, and a common first or last stop near the airports.
The easy resort
Under two hours from Bangkok with a full resort city’s worth of hotels, food and things to do.
A family side too
Beyond its party reputation, Pattaya has gardens, museums, an island and theme parks that make it a genuine family destination.
Koh Larn
A quick ferry reaches Koh Larn, with beaches far clearer than the city shore, the highlight for many visitors.
A Day in Pattaya
A well-rounded day that shows Pattaya’s better side: an island morning, a cultural or garden afternoon, a sunset viewpoint, and an evening as lively or as low-key as you like. Swap the order to taste, and take whichever option suits you.
Pattaya has a well-earned nightlife reputation concentrated around Walking Street, which is easy to seek out or entirely avoid. It is also very family-friendly by day. For clean swimming, head to Koh Larn or Jomtien rather than the central city beach.

Ferry to Koh Larn
Beat the city beaches with a morning ferry to Koh Larn, where the water is clear and the sand is bright. Grab a beach and a longtail to the quieter coves.
Culture or gardens
Two of Pattaya’s best non-beach sights. Pick the hand-carved temple or the sculpted gardens.
Viewpoint & Big Buddha
Head up to the Pratumnak hill viewpoint over the whole bay, and the golden Big Buddha temple nearby, best in the softening light.
Dinner & a Show
Seafood on the beach road, a buzzing night market, or a famous cabaret show. Nightlife is easy to find, and just as easy to skip for an early night.
Beyond the Beach
Pattaya is packed with all-weather attractions, handy with kids or on a rainy day:
Water & adventure
Cartoon Network Amazone, Ramayana Water Park and Frost Magical Ice of Siam are among Thailand’s best, all near the city.
Quirky indoors
Art in Paradise’s 3D art, the Upside-Down House and Ripley’s at the mall keep younger kids happy when the weather turns.
Off the Beaten Path
Look past the neon and Pattaya has a surprising spread: a floating market, hilltop temples, vineyards and quieter southern beaches within easy reach.
Good to Know
A few pointers to get the best of Pattaya and sidestep its rougher edges.
Skip the city beach
The central Pattaya Beach is convenient but not the cleanest for swimming. Head to Koh Larn or Jomtien for clear water and nicer sand.
Easy to avoid or find
The adult nightlife clusters around Walking Street and a few sois. It is simple to enjoy Pattaya’s beaches, food and attractions without ever going near it.
Ride the baht bus
Blue songthaews (baht buses) loop set routes along the beach roads for a few baht, the cheapest and easiest way around. Agree on private-car fares first.
